Itinerary & Accommodations
You will need to reach Delhi on your own; from there, your journey will begin. We will provide airport pickup and transfer to your hotel in Delhi.
After a night above the clouds, we arrive in Delhi. Upon arrival, we first complete the entry formalities, which take a little longer in India, and then meet our tour guide. Together, we travel to our accommodation, where we check into our rooms before gathering our first impressions of the metropolis. We begin by driving past the Red Fort and reach Old Delhi. There, we board rickshaws and are driven through the narrow, bustling lanes, where merchants transport all kinds of goods in wooden carts, women in colorful robes do their shopping, and the occasional sacred cow crosses our path. Later, our journey takes us to New Delhi. Wide boulevards, the India Gate, and the imposing government buildings characterize this side of the city. Finally, we visit the impressive Qutb Minar – one of the tallest minarets in the world and a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture.
Early in the morning, we depart for the airport with a packed breakfast to catch our flight to Leh. Even the approach to the former kingdom of Ladakh is an experience in itself – the view of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas is guaranteed to be unforgettable. Upon arrival in Leh (3,500 m), we use the morning to acclimatize to the altitude. We enjoy lunch at our accommodation. In the late afternoon, we stroll together to the market and immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Ladakh’s capital – amidst fragrant spice stalls, Tibetan handicrafts, and friendly vendors. We return to our accommodation in time for dinner.
Today we’ll explore the main sights of Leh and its surroundings. First, we’ll travel to the Stok Palace, located just outside the city, which still serves as a part-time residence for the former royal family of Ladakh. Back in Leh, we’ll visit the former royal palace, perched atop a steep cliff overlooking the city. During a meeting with a Ladakhi family, we’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions we may have about daily life in Ladakh and enjoy a relaxing chat over a warming cup of tea. After a hearty lunch at our accommodation, you’ll have some free time. We’ll meet again in the late afternoon to visit the Shanti Stupa, which sits on a hill overlooking the city. It’s a magnificent spot to watch the sunset. We’ll conclude the day with dinner at our accommodation.
Today we’ll explore three impressive structures deeply rooted in the history and culture of Ladakh. We begin at Hemis Monastery – the largest and wealthiest monastery in the region, renowned for its magnificent frescoes and precious treasures. Next, we’ll visit Thiksey Monastery, perched like a fortress on the mountainside at an altitude of 3,300 meters, its layout strongly reminiscent of the Potala Palace in Tibet. In Shey, we’ll visit the former royal palace, from which the fate of Ladakh was once decided. We’ll dedicate ample time to each of these three sites. Your guide will share fascinating background stories while also giving you plenty of space to take photos or simply soak up the unique atmosphere. Along the way, we’ll stop at a school – this brief interruption of the lessons will be met with smiles, as it’s a welcome opportunity for everyone to experience each other’s culture. We’ll return to Leh in the late afternoon, filled with memorable impressions.
Today we travel to the Indus Valley to visit two special monasteries. Our first stop is Likir, which greets us from afar with its imposing, seven-meter-high golden “Buddha of the Future.” Since the monastery is still active, we might encounter some curious monks and strike up a conversation. Afterward, we drive to Alchi (3,100 m) – an absolute highlight of any Ladakh trip. From the outside, the monastery appears unassuming, as it sits on level ground rather than perched atop a hill. However, inside, you’ll find intricate wood carvings and vibrant murals, among the most important artistic treasures of the Western Himalayas. We’ll also enjoy lunch here. In the late afternoon, we arrive in Uleytokpo (3,040 m). Our simple but comfortable accommodation is like a green oasis nestled among apricot and apple trees, overlooking the Indus River. There’s even a small spa – perhaps you’d like to treat yourself to a massage (optional) to unwind and end the day.
The scenery of the past few days has been impressive – but today it feels like we’re traveling to another world. The road leads us through a barren, almost lunar landscape, past bizarre sandstone formations that wind and weather have sculpted into tower-like “chimneys.” After about two hours, we reach Lamayuru (3,510 m) with its namesake monastery, spectacularly perched atop a steep mountain ridge. We take our time to explore the roughly 1,000-year-old monastery and soak up the special atmosphere of this place. We return to Uleytokpo for lunch. In the afternoon, we walk to Rizong Monastery, nestled deep in a valley and known for its particularly strict monastic rules. We return to our accommodation in the late afternoon and can relax and enjoy the rest of the day.
Today we return to Leh along the same, but no less exciting, route. Just before reaching the city, we’ll make two worthwhile stops: First, we’ll visit Phyang Monastery, belonging to the Red Hat order, and then Spituk Monastery – the headquarters of the Gelug order. Your guide will be happy to explain the differences between these two important schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In Spituk, we’ll enjoy our packed lunches with a view of the surrounding mountains. In the afternoon, we’ll arrive back in Leh, where the rest of the day is yours to explore at your leisure – perhaps with a stroll through the market or a relaxing tea in one of the small cafes. We’ll have dinner together at our accommodation.
Today we leave Leh heading north, where not only impressive monasteries but also surprisingly lush vegetation await us. After about two hours’ drive, we reach one of the highest motorable passes in the world – the Khardung La at 5,340 meters. Here, the air is noticeably thinner, so we drive slowly and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain range. Beyond the pass lies the Nubra Valley (3,050 m), a fertile oasis fed by the Nubra River, whose banks are lined with almost forest-like strips of greenery. We fortify ourselves with a packed lunch along the way before reaching our accommodation in the afternoon. If time allows, we will visit the hot springs of Panamik. The inhabitants of Ladakh are convinced of the healing powers of the mineral-rich water – even if it might take some getting used to for our eyes.
Did you sleep well surrounded by nature? After breakfast, we’ll set off on a hike (1.5 hours, moderate difficulty). The trail leads us along winding paths, past small streams, and through a tranquil landscape to a nearby monastery. We’ll return to our accommodation for lunch before heading out again in the afternoon to visit the larger towns in the valley. In Diskit and Hundar, we’ll explore not only the impressive monasteries but also a unique natural phenomenon: sand dunes have formed at the confluence of the Shyok and Nubra rivers – an almost surreal scene at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. Here, we’ll encounter the two-humped camels of Bactria, relics from the days of the caravans on the ancient Silk Road. Those who wish can take a short ride (optional). In the evening, we’ll once again enjoy the peace and quiet of our accommodation.
Today we have a long journey back, as there’s only one route back to Leh via the Khardung La Pass. Before we start the drive, we’ll stretch our legs with a hike (1.5 hours, moderate difficulty) to a nearby village. This will be a chance to chat with the locals and learn how they manage their daily lives in this remote mountain region. Afterwards, we’ll board the bus – sit back and enjoy the six- to seven-hour drive through the magnificent scenery. We’ll stop for a break with our packed lunch wherever we particularly like. We’ll arrive in Leh in the late afternoon and have time to freshen up at our accommodation or relax for a bit before meeting up for dinner in the evening.
Your journey is drawing to a close: This morning you’ll say goodbye to your tour guide and the other travelers who have booked an extension. You’ll then fly back to Delhi. An English-speaking transfer guide will meet you and take you to our hotel. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy.
